Social conventions rule our life much more than we would like and everybody wants to keep update with the new codes trying to be on time. Fashion industry’s engine runs uninterruptedly, always creating new trends, concepts and colours. It is hard to keep update about fashion trends and the sole possibility to survive this for a human being is to stick to the aesthetic of the social group he likes most. This helps us feel part of this group, part of the society and feel reassured in our personal relationships.
In some sense our dress and shoes give some information about us and help spare time with unnecessary explanations. It is well known that “I is not the cowl that makes the monk”, nevertheless one can feel free to betray and not to give too much information with the dress. Useless to say that the dress and the accessories we wear are part of the costume wore by the character we want to play in the theatre of life…..
Many artists have been working on this aspect of the human being and have been thinking about the fact that we get dressed for some more reasons than to hide our body or to protect ourselves from the inclement weather. Sometimes they ironically analyze and neutralize the stress and anxiety which fashion and the need of “looking cool” generate in some persons. Sometimes they just describe some situations charging them with meanings and the banal turns out to be metaphorical. On many occasions the artist reshapes objects and situations to create a new order in which emotions and imagination play an essential role.
This exhibition gathers a group of Spanish photographers who somehow have been taking part in this discussion about fashion. The paradox, the symbol, the metaphor the evocation the fantasy, the desire, the theatrical and the description make up the staff these images are made of. The exhibit does not pretend to give a complete reflection of the way this subject has been approached in Spain during the last few years; it simply aims to create a space in which the public can be accomplice in the artists’ game and in the expressive diversity of photography.
